Tofu

Tofu is made by condensing soy milk and pressing it into blocks of varying firmness. Naturally mild in flavor, tofu absorbs seasonings exceptionally well, making it one of the most versatile plant-based ingredients. It is rich in protein, providing all nine essential amino acids, and is particularly high in leucine, a key amino acid for muscle building and energy production.

With its low carbohydrate content, tofu is an excellent meat substitute for those looking to balance protein intake with minimal carbs.

Nutritional Benefits

Beyond its high protein content, tofu boasts an impressive mineral profile. Just 100g (~3 oz) of firm tofu provides 20%+ of the RDA for: Calcium, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Selenium & Zinc.

This makes tofu a nutrient-dense addition to any diet, supporting bone health, metabolism, and immune function.

Cooking with Tofu

Since tofu has a neutral taste, it works in both sweet and savory dishes. It can be:

✓ Marinated to absorb flavors;
✓ Blended into creamy sauces or desserts;
✓ Cut, shredded, or crumbled for different textures;
✓ Eaten as-is.

Types of Tofu

Tofu comes in different firmness levels:

Silken – Soft and smooth, perfect for soups, smoothies, and desserts
Firm & Extra Firm – Best for frying, baking, and stir-frying
Super Firm – Very dense, requiring minimal pressing

At DAREBEETS, we use only firm tofu in our recipes. It’s the most versatile option - whether frying, blending, or baking - and keeping just one type on hand simplifies meal prep.

Health Benefits

Tofu has been linked to:
✓ Reduced risk of certain cancers
✓ Improved heart health
✓ Better metabolic health
✓ Stronger immunity and muscle function
✓ Eased perimenopause & menopause symptoms

Isoflavones & The Soy Myth

Soy contains isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen - a plant compound that can mimic estrogen but is not actual estrogen. While isoflavones can interact with estrogen receptors, they also have anti-estrogenic effects, such as blocking natural estrogen from binding to receptors and reducing estrogen production in fat tissue.

The idea that soy has a “feminizing” effect is a myth - research shows that moderate soy consumption is safe for all.

Storage & Freezing

Best option: Refrigerated fresh tofu for optimal taste and texture.
How to store: Keep in its original packaging or in water (changing the water daily) if opened.
Freezing: If nearing expiration, freeze tofu for up to 4 months. This also alters its texture, making it chewier and more meat-like, perfect for heartier dishes.

Tofu Brands

Not all tofu is created equal. The taste varies greatly from brand to brand. There are absolutely awful tasting tofu out there that can put you off the whole thing for life. We found that the best tasting tofu is made by “Taifun”, a German brand. We are not affiliated with it in any way and it’s just our opinion. It’s rare that tofu tastes great on its own but this one does. All of the recipes with tofu on DAREBEETS were made using plain tofu by Taifun.

Tofu Vs Chicken Breast

Tofu contains half the protein amount of a chicken breast but it also has 25% fewer calories and +20% RDA for most minerals per 100 g ( 3 oz ). It’s not a like-for-like replacement but it is a good replacement with its own benefits.
