Bananas
Bananas are one of the most widely available and cost-effective fruits, packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are perfect for thickening smoothies, naturally sweetening dishes, and as a quick energy boost. Unlike refined sugar, bananas bring nutrients and fiber to the table, making them a great healthy alternative to sweeteners.
Nutrition
A medium-sized banana (~120 g / 4 oz) provides:
✓ 30% of the RDA for Vitamin C
✓ 20% of the RDA for Vitamin B6
✓ A good amount of Magnesium, Manganese, and Potassium
Bananas are often praised as a post-workout recovery snack due to their Magnesium + Potassium combo, which helps replenish electrolytes and provides easily digestible carbohydrates for energy. They are high in fiber and contain no fat.
Ripeness & How to Use Bananas
Bananas are 75% water and high in starch, but their nutrient content changes as they ripen:
Unripe (green) bananas contain more resistant starch, making them better for gut health and blood sugar control. They are less sweet and firmer.
Ripe (yellow with brown spots) bananas have higher sugar content, making them great for natural sweetening in baking. They are softer and easier to digest.
Tip: Use unripe bananas for a healthier snack and ripe bananas as a natural sweetener in recipes.
Storage
Ripening: Bananas ripen at room temperature. Once they start developing spots, move them to the fridge to extend freshness for another week.
Freezing: The best way to preserve bananas is to freeze them:
For snacks & smoothies: Peel, slice, and store in a zip-lock bag in a single layer - they’ll last up to 6 months.
For baking: Mash and flatten them into a freezer bag, remove air, seal, and label. Once defrosted, use immediately - not refreeze.
Tip: Frozen banana slices make great snacks straight from the freezer, or they can be blended into creamy smoothies.
Can You Freeze Them?
Yes! Bananas freeze well but will turn mushy when defrosted. Use frozen bananas for baking, smoothies, or as a frozen treat.
What Do We Use?
At DAREBEETS, we always keep fresh bananas for snacks and freeze overripe ones for baking or smoothies—nothing goes to waste!
